In the event the main event of our week was a non-event.
The annual meeting of the sidesmen (of both gender but the term sideswoman might suggest an unsavoury connotation) was to have taken place earlier in the week. It was called off at the last minute due to the ill health of Gwen our long standing and omnicompetent Senior Sides‘man’.
We were disappointed because we had intended to express our appreciation then for the valuable way in which they assist us in our work week by week. If you’re a sidesman at St Andrews and reading this blog please accept our sincere appreciation for all you do. And to Gwen goes an even bigger expression of thanks with our loving concern and prayers for your health.
The first of the ten duties of sidesmen listed in the Churchwardens’ handbook is, providing the ‘books and papers needed for services’: the last is ‘how to contact the police’. Somewhere in the middle is the counting of the money and putting it in the safe.
If you’re reading this and not yet a sidesman why not give it a try? Training is available.
