The thing that went bump in the night.
It was in dark outside as we and the Area Dean met one evening this week to plan the service that will welcome Frances on 25 April. With just the lights we needed it had a spooky feel in the chancel as we sat alone working out where the bishop will sit on that great day. All of a sudden we heard a ghostly thud in the choir vestry. As Christian believers we ignored it, but when we heard another, even more otherworldly, it was time for intrepid investigation.
All was well. The ‘thing’ was our cleaner, Rosina, faithfully working a night shift to have the church ready for the pre-school and other activities the following morning.
That’s the Church of England in a nutshell. Most of the time quietly getting on with serving the community, but brightened by the occasional flash of purple and pomp. All with the aim to bring light into a dark world.
