On Wednesday there was a fire in the church. A controlled fire, but real flames, as last year’s palm crosses were burnt. The ash produced was applied to the foreheads of those who attended the short service to mark the beginning of Lent.
The Bishop of Guildford has come up with some useful ideas on transforming Lent this year. You can find them online or in a small brochure in the church vestibule.
We have changed the altar frontals and given the flower arrangers six weeks off as the church moves into Lentern mode. But the Sunday services in Lent are not all gloom and doom. There is real joy in the message of the cross (we call it Good Friday after all). That joy rings out in the hymns, songs and the preaching. God tells us that if we confess our sins he will faithfully keep his promise and, through the death of the Lord Jesus Christ, will cleanse us and forgive us from all sin. That should light a fire in your heart and transform Lent!
