I led prayers for the staff for the first time this week; another of the many and varied areas maintained by the churchwardens during the vacancy. It all sounds very official but in practice it meant a blessed half hour to pray and talk with Sue and Rowena in the office. The reading picked by the church diary for that day was rather a challenging one: 1 John 3:4-8 which led us to grab some different bible translations and a commentary from the shelves around us. We had a very interesting discussion about sin and came to a shared understanding of a passage we hadn’t thought about before.
It is not easy to carve out half an hour in the office, especially when the photocopier is misbehaving again, but so important and grounding for all of us to make those spaces in our lives to talk to God and listen for what he may or may not say to us.
The three of us all enjoyed Bishop Jo’s Christmas sermon and the new thinking about the Christmas story. That half hour in the office created ‘our stable out the back’ with time and space for God which Bishop Jo talked about – not easy but very worthwhile.
In 2017 I’m going to work on not filling my spiritual ‘stable out the back’ so full of stuff that I can’t get in, never mind God!
