Exploring the Meaning of Life

IF GOD DID EXIST WHAT WOULD YOU ASK?

Alpha Banner 2

Alpha runs for on Thursdays from 30 September for 9 weeks with a Saturday away after the 6th week.  The evening begins with a meal followed by a talk and finishes with the opportunity for questions and informal discussion.  This year we are launching our Alpha Course on 30th September.

The Alpha course consists of a series of talks based on theme devised by Nicky Gumbel in Holy Trinity Church in Brompton, comprehensively covering areas of Christian faith.  The course is subject based with one week each on Jesus Christ, his death, faith, the bible, prayer, guidance, the Holy Spirit and life as a Christian.  For more information on the course click here.

The Alpha course is designed primarily for people who aren't churchgoers and each course is open to everyone who would like to attend.

As a course, Alpha attracts a diverse range of guests of different ages and backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints. Over 7,000 churches are currently running the Alpha course across the UK in rural and urban settings, including every major UK city.

Why attend the Alpha course?

Alpha bannerGuests do Alpha for a wide variety of reasons - some want to investigate whether God exists; others are concerned about what happens after death. Some people have particular questions that they would like to discuss; others want to understand other peoples' beliefs or would like to explore what the purpose of life is. Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.

“Christianity is boring, untrue and irrelevant.”

At least one of those adjectives is likely to stick when it comes to the popular view of what has become the faith that has the largest number of adherents in the world today.  Sometimes it sums up the views of those brought up to go to church.

St Andrew’s Church, Oxshott regularly gives individuals, with some faith or none, the opportunity to examine the evidence and origins of Christianity by running Alpha  or Christianity Explored Courses.

Catch up with talks here

Christianity Explored, as its name suggests, encourages individual investigation by working through the 16 short chapters of the gospel of Mark in order to discover answers to 3 key questions about Christianity – Who is Jesus? Why did he come?  What does it mean to follow him?  In a short DVD presentation, Rico Tice of All Souls Church, Langham Place sets the scene for discussions that follow.

Many have attended one of these courses in St Andrews and would say that it has brought them to a personal faith in Jesus Christ that has transformed their values and thinking.  For some it was the first time that they had ever considered what Christians believe; for others it was a sort of homecoming to the faith in which they were confirmed as a teenager.

It is an opportunity to discover that you can rely on the truth of the bible to know Jesus Christ.  You can find that following him is neither boring nor irrelevant to life today.
