Chapter 1. Nehemiah hears bad news from Jerusalem. Nehemiah’s prayer
Chapter 2. The King allows Nehemiah to return to oversee the building of the walls.
Nehemiah inspects the walls.
Chapters 3-6 The walls are rebuilt
Chapter 3 – the people work together
Chapter 4 – Opposition from the enemies (Tobiah, Sanballat)
Chapter 5 – Internal opposition
Chapter 6 – More opposition and testing for Nehemiah. The walls are finished in less than two months
Chapter 7 A list of those who returned
Chapter 8 Ezra reads the law to the people. They celebrate the feast of tabernacles.
Chapter 9 The people confess their sin. Ezra retells Israel’s history and God’s faithfulness. (those who do not remember the past are forced to relive it!)
Chapter 10 The people renew the covenant and promise to follow the law.
Chapter 11-12 Those who returned – repopulating Jerusalem. The walls are re-dedicated
Chapter 13 In 433 Nehemiah returned to Babylon. On his return he finds that several things have gone wrong in his absence.
