‘What have I let myself in for’ was my first thought when I tentatively agreed to go on the St Andrew’s Parish Weekend (11 – 13 October 2013). I needn’t have worried! From the warm welcome on Friday evening when we all arrived, travel worn and frazzled from our busy lives, to a truly memorable praise service on the Sunday, it was a weekend to remember for all the right reasons.
Some 55 of us, ages ranging from 8 to 80, attended the weekend at Wokefield Park near Reading, and enjoyed a varied time of talks, food, entertainment (including ‘Desert Island Discs’ hosted by Ron Stewart, and a fiendishly difficult but fun quiz hosted by Jill Mengham), as well as relaxation and worship. Our speaker, David Bracewell, kept us transfixed with his humorous, informative and inspirational talks on discipleship.
In a world with so many challenges, David asked us to:
- Face Fear with Courage
- Face Frivolity with the Clarity that there is lasting treasure in following Christ
- Face Fragmentation with Connectedness with our community
- Face Freneticism with Calm
- Face Fragility with the Confidence that God will hold us in His hand
You can hear David’s talks at Sermons & Talks
Many thanks to all those who made the weekend happen, and next time when you think ‘this is not for me’ think again – you will be in for a really pleasant surprise!
