Old songs, new songs, songs chosen by all sorts of local people – ‘Oxshott Sings Praise’ (on 22 June) was proclaimed “a dream come true” by organiser Jenny Mathieson. “I’ve always wanted to do something like this! And it turned out to be such a fun, relaxing and uplifting event.”
More than 100 people came along for the community get together which was led by the St Andrew’s worship band and choir.
|The songs were chosen by Oxshott people including 9 year old Sandy Zabari (the youngest) who chose ‘Lord I lift your name on high’, former submariner Paul Lewis who selected ‘Eternal father strong to save’ and St Andrew’s musical director Val Beynon’s ‘Praise my soul the king of heaven’.|
Everyone who chose a song also had the opportunity to explain why it was special to them. Alexandra Cresswell said “it was lovely to hear why people chose the songs they did.” And Emily Galazka described the event as “a wonderful way to come together.”
You can listen to all the song introductions below.
Before the singing there were games and entertainments for children and afterwards everyone headed out into the late afternoon sun to enjoy a glass of wine or punch with home made savouries and cakes.
“You can’t beat the power of song!” – as Fiona Trinder aptly put it.
