What is Alpha? It’s a simple course about Christianity and what it means to people. It’s subject based, with one week each on Jesus Christ, his death, faith, the bible, prayer, guidance, the Holy Spirit and life as a Christian. It runs for one evening a week over 10 weeks. It is presented after a simple meal. It gives you the opportunity to share your views with others who would like to find out more.
It’s open to anyone who wants to ask honest questions and find some answers and is designed primarily for people who aren't churchgoers. Each course is open to everyone who would like to attend.
Alpha is a worldwide phenomenon. There are over 50,400 courses running in 163 countries, of which 8,742 are running in the UK, with 184,000 people attending. Alpha attracts a diverse range of guests of different ages and backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints, amongst them were prisoners, lawyers, soldiers, doctors, housewives, businessmen, students, footballers and TV stars. Since 1992, when Alpha hit the UK with only five courses, over 16 million people have attended Alpha worldwide, several million of them in the UK.
Why attend the Alpha course?
Guests do Alpha for a wide variety of reasons - some want to investigate whether God exists; others are concerned about what happens after death. Some people have particular questions that they would like to discuss; others want to understand other peoples' beliefs or would like to explore what the purpose of life is. Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.
We all have a spiritual side. Could Alpha help you find yours? You’ll never know if you don’t join in. The course starts on 12 January at 7.30pm in the St Andrew’s Church Hall, Oxshott. It’s free.
