The Finnies’ Christmas Soup Kitchen

Our mission partners, Dean & Paula Finnie in South Africa, run a soup kitchen throughout the year at ‘The Gathering’, their community church. Every year they hold a special Christmas Soup Kitchen which is an especially joyful outreach occasion. Owing to their plans to be in the UK during December, this year’s lunch will be held in January as a welcome to 2022.

They have sent us some photographs of last year’s event and say…

“Hopefully these photos will give a really good flavour of this beautiful annual event that we have been so privileged to put on for our soup kitchen friends. So for the past 3 years we have invited 120 soup kitchen regulars, and then 80 in 2020 because of COVID-19, to a sit down celebration Christmas lunch. The aim is to extend the love of God to our friends in a very real and practical way, celebrating each one as an individual whom God loves to bits and for whom He gave His Son Jesus. Every year, both the invitees and volunteers from The Gathering and wider church circles, have been absolutely blown away by the love and generosity of this outreach. We love that it is made possible by hard graft locally, as well as practical financial gifts both locally and from overseas. Every year we have a brief 3 minute preach spot inbetween main course and dessert and there is opportunity for prayer and ministry throughout the lunch. Every year people have gone away with very full bellies(!), take away and a goodie bag with love from The Gathering.”

The Mission Partnering Committee at St Andrew’s have chosen to support the Finnies’ work again this year,  and we encourage you to donate by making a bank transfer to:

Any excess funds not needed for the special lunch will go to help provide for the kitchen running costs, since the Soup Kitchen runs throughout the year to help share God’s love with needy families.

Worship - every year our lunch starts with a quick practical briefing to the team of volunteers of how the day will work, assigning of jobs etc, then THE main thing of all - a 20 minute time of worship and prayer. Always so powerful

Chopping tongue - 2020's lunch was a huge serving of cold tongue, chicken, potato salad and bean salad. The tongue was cooked the previous day and sliced that morning. An enormous challenge!

Table preparation is very important to us. We want our friends to feel that they are at the banquet of the year. We seated 10 per table with full cotton linen and decorations

We take great care to give each attendee a personal ticket to lunch in the 3 soup kitchens leading up to the event and then print off a list for the day. We love that each person is known by name. This is phenomenally powerful and a great aid for prayer

Volunteers - as a small church we could not do this without a loyal army of volunteers. Richard and Annatije have volunteered each year with their children and testify to their lives being changed as a result

Our friends start to arrive and are seated after all the COVID sanitation. Most, especially the kids, have been standing around waiting eagerly for hours up to this point. Anticipation is high!

Hard to describe the vibe, but it is quite literally the happiest event and the best meal ever for everyone. Lots of very happy munching, banter and laughter!

New Testaments being handed out. In 2020 we gifted everyone with a NT in memory of Paula's Dad who had recently died and who had been a loyal supporter of the soup kitchen, which he loved.
