Building Your Church – the new plan!

Full story and architect’s drawing

We continue to be very excited about the vision for St Andrew’s. We are witnessing an amazing rebuilding of the ‘people’ side of BYC, such as ABC, Lunch Club, ‘Open the Book’ and St Andrew’s @4, and we are now, at last, about to embark on the ‘buildings’ side of BYC.

We are pleased to report that the DAC (the church panning authority) supports our new plans and we look forward to hearing responses from Elmbridge and the community of Oxshott as we go forward.

As a result of a great deal of  prayer, reflection, due diligence and perseverance, the new plan for BYC is to carry out a major programme of refurbishing rather than re-building, with significant upgrading to many aspects of our building. As Ron Stewart, chair of the BYC Steering Group says:

“In cutting our cloth to what we feel is a deliverable plan, there will inevitably be some aspects of our wider ambitions that will not be possible at this time. However, we are confident that the changes will be transformational and will enhance our Vision, better enabling us to serve our local community, as well as build on the wonderful successes we have been experiencing in ministries such as ABC, St Andrew’s @4, Lunch Club and others coming on stream each month.”

What a joyful Sunday evening!

It really was a joy to join the new contemporary worship service being ‘piloted’ on Sunday 23 October at St Andrew’s. The resources were intentionally simple with Patrick Davies leading our sung worship on guitar, and Patrick Fleming speaking to us with the title, ‘Faith is spelt R-I-S-K’.

Using the account of Peter walking on the water from Matthew 14, Patrick encouraged us, inspired us and challenged us to ‘get out of the boat’, keeping our eyes on Jesus, having ‘Faith’ not ‘Fear’. For, as he summarised from Hebrews 11.1,
‘Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.’

Another point of difference was that the talk was followed by a short time of discussion when people were invited to share their own experiences of ‘getting out of the boat’ – also very encouraging.

The next pilot service is planned for Sunday 4 December, with the title ‘Faith is spelt L-O-V-E’ and where the team will try out a different form of sung worship and will take on board the feedback from Sunday (the reason for the pilots!)

So, if a contemporary service of Worship, Word and Prayer is your thing, and if you want to be part of shaping this new Sunday evening service, why not come along? Refreshments are served from 6.30pm and the service runs from 7-8pm.

For Parents of Teenagers

Do you have teenagers? Are you concerned about their mental health? Would you welcome the opportunity to chat with others in a similar situation?
If your answer to any of the above is ‘Yes’, then please come to St Andrew’s on Monday 26 September between 7.30pm and 9pm.

Frances and others are offering the chance to meet and chat at St Andrew’s over simple refreshments. This is a trial to see if such a group would be welcomed locally. There will be no ‘experts’: this is simply a chance to meet, chat and share.

Mission Partners – take a look

St Andrew’s gives financial support to a number of Mission Partners – some local, some national and some international. Many of the Mission Partners are linked to one of our Life Groups, who keep in touch and support them through regular prayer and communications, while others remain linked to the wider church through events and activities.

So that we can all get to know our Mission Partners better, we have added new information, photos, updates and prayer requests to each of our Mission Partner pages and we hope you will take time to enjoy reading about them and adding your support – however you are able.

Building Your Church (BYC) update

During the last 12 months there have been some very interesting, challenging and exciting developments on BYC – both in terms of the people and the buildings.

We are pleased to invite you to join us in church on Sunday 20 March when the BYC team will share these developments with you. The presentations will take place at 11.30am with coffee following the 10am service and again at 3pm. There will be children’s activities, so you are welcome to come with your children. We hope you can join us.

don’t be invisible!
When first logging in to My ChurchSuite, you may see the following message on the Home page alerting you that none of your basic contact details, including your name, are visible to others in My ChurchSuite.

Being invisible in My ChurchSuite means that…

  • Your name will not show on any rotas that you serve on or the underlying ministry’s member list – fellow rota members and ministry overseers will not see your name on the rota, and will not be able to contact you.
  • Your name will not show on any small group and life group member lists that you are a member of – fellow group members and leaders will not see your name in the group’s member list, and will not be able to contact you.
  • You will not be able to use the Group Email functionality in the My Rotas and My Groups sections – you won’t be able to send group emails or be able to receive group emails, meaning you could miss out on important communications.

We encourage you to review your Privacy Settings and set your name and at least one means of contact to be visible so that your community can function well. Do speak to the Church Office if you have any questions about our privacy policy that are unclear. You can be reassured that your name and any other basic contact details that you do choose to set visible to others…

  • will only be visible to other members who, like you, have been authorised and invited to use My ChurchSuite,
  • that you can manage your privacy settings in My ChurchSuite at any time in the future,
  • that the only basic personal information that you can choose to share is your Name, Email, Mobile, Telephone and Address – no other personal information is shared (though it may be visible to you),
  • that while parents can manage the personal information of each of their own children, children details are not visible to others in My ChurchSuite unless a child is a member of a rota or small group, in which case their name only is visible to fellow rota members or fellow group members – no further child details are ever disclosed in My ChurchSuite,
  • that My ChurchSuite is secure.
how do i manage my rotas?
You must be logged in to My ChurchSuite to manage your rotas. See “HOW DO I LOGIN?“.

My Rotas
You can access this area from the “My Rotas” section on the menu.

At the top of the My Rotas page you will see the “Next Serving” section, detailing your upcoming serving. Clicking on the date will give you the full details of that service, including your particular role and who else is serving with you.

Dates shown in red strike-through relate to unavailability that you’ve scheduled and that you have not yet arranged a swap for. When you add unavailability (see below), you might see entries in your ‘next serving’ section turn red.

Unavailability
Another tab takes you to the “Unavailability” section. Adding your unavailability well in advance will greatly help ministry leaders to manage rotas more effectively, enabling them to more efficiently plan ahead and identify gaps ahead of time.

This section shows a list of dates when you have said you are unavailable, perhaps holidays or known dates when you won’t be available to serve.

To add your unavailability, click on the  + Add unavailability button

You can edit unavailability once it has been added, by clicking on the within each date and choosing “edit” or “delete”.

You can also add or edit unavailabily for your spouse / partner at the same time without them having to log in seperately.

Rotas
By clicking on the Rotas tab you will see a list of all the rotas that you may be involved in. Click on the rota name to see all the details.

Rota Swaps
To arrange a rota swap, look at future dates for your rota to see someone who might be prepared to swap with you, and contact them using the contact details listed for them when the rota was originally emailed to you, or by clicking on the “teams” tab within the rota. Alternatively you can always look up their details in the “Search for others” section of My ChurchSuite.

If no contact details are shown it means that they have not given permission for them to be visible. It is therefore very important that, if you are willing, you make your contact details visible so that others can arrange swaps with you. You can easily do this by going to the “My Details” section and choosing the “Privacy” tab.

You can also use the “Email members” button, at the top right of the rota view, to send an email to everyone on the rota.

Once you have agreed a swap you can then process the swap to the rota by clicking the against your name and choosing Organise swap. (It is important that you do this so that everyone knows about the change.)

The Organise swap pop-up opens to select who you have organised to Swap with – only available rota members will be listed. The Return swap menu will show a list of that person’s future serving dates for all rotas.

Click Save Changes to process the swap, which will update the rota and send the swap confirmations. A swap that causes a clash will be detected and the swap prevented. Typically, swap clashes are caused when swapping with someone who is unavailable or who is already serving on another rota for the same date/time. In this case you will have to contact the office to sort it out.

For more information, please see the User Guide.

Accept/decline
For some rotas you may be asked to accept or decline an invitation to serve. You can do this either by responding to the email or at any time in My ChurchSuite. Please ensure that you respond promptly so that we can be confident that you will be able to serve.

For more details please see the User Guide.

For some rotas you may be able to sign up for future dates yourself. Just press +Sign Up where it is shown.

All Rotas
Clicking on “All Rotas” shows an overview of all serving teams for the forthcoming Sunday. You can change the date at the top of this page to see “All Rotas” for an alternative date.

Join a Life Group – or give it a try!

Life Groups are at the heart of St Andrew’s church life, providing an opportunity to grow in faith through bible study, prayer, fellowship, sharing what is happening in our lives, and interaction with our Mission Partners.

If you don’t currently belong to a Life Group and would like to ‘give it a try’, we would love to help you find the right one for you. Life Groups meet weekly or fortnightly on different days and at different times, so we hope there is one suitable for everyone.

If you would like more information, please fill in this form, or contact Patrick Fleming via .

ABC is thriving – find out about it!

Since starting on 13 September, ABC (Adults, Babies, Children) has been full every week! Not only is it a time of play, songs, stories and refreshments for little ones, it’s also a time for their adults to have coffee and connect with others at the same stage of life. The feedback has been really positive and we are so pleased to see young families being able to meet together again.

For the moment, places are necessarily limited to 15 little ones with their adults, so please remember to book your place each week.

ABC runs every Monday in term time from 9.15-11am – Patrick and Belinda look forward to welcoming you.

Enjoy our refurbished playground!

A wonderful team of volunteers has worked very hard over the last few weeks to restore the outdoor playground (at the back of the church) to its former glory. Please stop by to admire it and bring your little ones to enjoy it too. There are also benches and seats for you to meet and chat, and don’t forget the coffee van at St Andrew’s every Friday from 8-12.30 and from 2.30-4pm!

Patrick’s Ordination!

Saturday 10 October is a special day when our curate, Patrick Davies, will be ordained. The service will take place at Holy Trinity, Claygate, for the candidates and their families, and it will be live streamed so that anyone else can watch at home.

Watch the live stream at 5pm on 10 October.

More details are available on the Guildford diocese website.

We encourage you all to encourage Patrick by joining the event online.
